THE WONDERFUL REGION
LE MARCHE
Overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the centre of Italy, with slightly more than a million and a half inhabitants spread among its five provinces of Ancona, the regional seat, Pesaro and Urbino, Macerata, Fermo and Ascoli Piceno, the Marche, which has always been Italy’s “Gateway to the East”, is the country’s only region with a plural name.

SENIGALLIA
The name recalls the ancient origin of the city that tradition says was founded by a mythical “Brenno”, leader of the Gauls. First Roman colony on the Adriatic, Senigallia knows moments of great fortune and profound decadence.
Its certain revival can be dated to the mid-fifteenth century, when Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesti fortified and repopulated its territory.
In the nineteenth century Senigallia beacame the home of Pope Pius IX, the city still lives on as a protagonist in history. In the first decades of the 20th century, the image of Senigallia was affirmed as the privileged site of the rising seaside tourism. A monument splendidly celebrated this vocation of the city, the Rotonda a Mare inaugurated in 1933.

URBINO
Urbino is situated between the valleys of the Metauro and Foglia rivers. Its historic centre now boasts the honour of being included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. It is birthplace of two great artists, Bramante and Raphael and it is home to one of the oldest and most important universities in Europe, founded in 1506. For the second half of the 15th century , Urbino’s windy hill was the setting for one of the most illustrious courts in Europe.

OSTRA
Ostra is located 193m above sea level, between the Adriatic coast and the Apennines. Tradition has it that Ostra comes from a Roman town having the same name, situated in the valley of the Misa river, which was destroyed by the Visigoths in 410 A.C.
Ostra’s centuries-long history has left the town a rich artistic and cultural heritage. The “Monumento al nome e allo stemma di Ostra” (Monument to the name and coat of arms of Ostra), made up of a granite column taken from the original settlement, is an evidence of its roman origin.
